Can you answer these three?

Most families arrive with a college list. A plan is a different thing.

If you can answer all three, you may not need us. If any one gives you pause, that is what the thirty minutes are for.

What will you actually pay?

A number on an award letter is one year at one school. A plan accounts for four years, at every school on the list, against what your family actually has.

Ask yourself: What is your total four-year out-of-pocket cost at each school your student is considering?

How to approach aid, even if you think you earn too much

Aid formulas may not work the way most people assume, and merit aid is awarded on a different basis than need-based aid. If you have already decided your family will not qualify for anything, that decision is worth examining rather than assuming.

Ask yourself: Do you know how each school on your list awards merit aid, and how your student’s profile fits it?

Can your family afford the top choice?

Fit and finances are the same conversation. What a school costs, what your student borrows, and what they pay back are all part of choosing it.

Ask yourself: If your student borrows to attend their top choice, what will the monthly payment be after graduation?

What we cover, and what this is not.

We cover

  1. Where your college plan stands and what is not yet accounted for
  2. A realistic estimate of what you would pay at the schools on your list
  3. Your questions, whatever they are
  4. Whether you need help at all; sometimes the honest answer is that you are in good shape

This is not

  • A webinar, a group call, or a recorded presentation
  • Not a hard sell. If POM is not the right fit for your family, we will say so on the call.
  • A commitment of any kind

Who you will talk to

“I’ll offer suggestions based on where you are and explain how POM could help your family navigate the next steps.”

Why families ask us

In their words.

“Throughout this lengthy and often complicated college application process, POM College Consulting has assisted me and quelled my fears every step of the way, whether it be compiling a well-rounded and reasonable college list, providing much-needed advice on essays, or finding scholarships to reduce the financial burden of attending college.

My college counselor, Wendy, was an immense source of guidance and assurance who gave me the freedom to craft my story authentically, instead of having to worry about the minutiae of applying to college.

I’m happy to announce that I’ve been accepted to Princeton University, Yale University, and Stanford University, among others, for the class of 2027, and many more adventures await me.”

Bryant Li, TX

“POM has had a great impact on my college searching, planning, and future. It has been very beneficial to have POM while headed into a very uncertain future. They have a wonderful job of providing all the necessary steps, tools, strategies, and helpful tips to ease your mind.

One of the things I am most grateful for is the opportunities it has opened my eyes to. In my college search, I pondered on the idea of going somewhere far from home as I looked into colleges out of state. Alongside POM it was an easy decision as I had all the tools necessary in order to understand exactly all the things I should look for in a college best fit for me.

In addition to this, while on my search for college I came across a unique opportunity that my college offered and was then able to meet my now future roommate! Because of this I could not be more thankful to have POM!”

Before you reach out

Four questions parents ask first.

Is it really free?
Thirty minutes, no cost, nothing to buy or sign. POM offers paid services, and if they fit your situation Jessica will tell you about them. If they do not, she will not.
We probably make too much to qualify for aid.
Many families skip this call for that reason. Merit aid is usually not awarded on the basis of income, and need-based formulas are more complicated than most people expect. Thirty minutes can show you where you stand.
Phone or video?
Whichever you prefer. You choose when we confirm the time.
My student is only a sophomore. Too early?
No. Course selection, testing strategy and how the school list gets built all happen well before senior year. The earlier the conversation, the more options stay open.
Do you work with families outside South Carolina?
Yes. We work with families nationwide. Our team also has working knowledge of state-specific aid programs, which matters when your student is comparing in-state and out-of-state options.
What happens after the call?
If we are a fit, we will explain how working together looks and what it costs. If we are not, we will point you toward what would help. Either way, you should leave the call with a clearer picture than when you started.
